Visual Studio Tip / Trick #023 English Transcription:

Today’s Visual Studio video trick of the day is a re-post of Sara Ford’s original trick number 23 back in August of 2007. Today’s trick is tracking changes visually in the editor. So no doubt you're familiar with [CRTL]+[Z] but if you make change in your document before its been saved, you will notice there is an asterick placed next to the file name. Now you press [CTRL]+[S] to save your document that asterick goes away. You also now have this little green line here which tells you that this is a modified line since you have opened and saved your document. Let me say that again. After you open your document, lines that you change will have a yellow line. Now if you save, those lines change to green so that tells you that this has been modified since you opened your document. Now by chance you’re not seeing this there is an option under Tools-> Options->Text Editor->General and there are two things that need to be turned on here. First the ability to track changes, that’s what affects your green and yellow lines being turned on and off. Also is the Selection Margin. If you turn your Selection Margin off, that’s this little tiny bit of space that’s used just to the right of your line numbers that turns on that Selection Margin. So make sure Track Changes is turned On as well as your Selection Margin and then you’ll be able to see those Yellow and Green indicator lines to what’s been changed since your document has been opened and last saved.
