Visual Studio Tip / Trick #040 English Transcription:

Today’s Visual studio trick of the day, trick No. 40 comes with a mystery. This post was originally blogged by Sara Ford in September of 2007 it’s trick No. 40 and It will take me just a minute to get through this but the mystery is the difference between her [CTRL]+[D] and my [CTRL]+[/]. To highlight like this and I that that comes because her profile might be set up as a Visual Basic profile and my profile is setup as C# profile. But has you have over this document window, you will see that my tool tip pops up with a [CTRL]+[/]. So the actual tip is using [CTRL]+[G]. In fact if you use [CTRL]+[G] to bring up a dialogue, it says go to line number and infact we type in line 17 and press [ENTER] it will take us to line 17. Now if we press [CTRL]+[/] to get to the document focus window and lets say we put in line 8 and now I can press [CTRL]+[G] and that will take us directly to line no. 8 without the dialogue. I have confirmed that this works both the same in Visual Studio 2005 as well so we go to line 15 [CTRL]+[G] sure enough my cursor takes me right to line 15. Finally as a trick you will see that we have lines, columns and character counts down here, if you double click any of these items can work the same in 2005 as 2008. It will bring up that [CTRL]+[G] item for you and I will sneak in another little quick trick here. Lot of people wonder whats the difference is between line column and character. Line and column are pretty obvious, thats kind of your X and Y but why is column & character count always the same. Well it’s dealing with the column on the matrix of where your cursor is Vs the actual character count you can see that by looking at one of my previous trick No. 19. If I go to advance & tabify those white spaces; now you can see that, I am actually on column 13 but I am only on character 4 so we got a couple of tips coming into video 40.

The above is an automated translation from English to Spanish using Google Translate API. If it's better than nothing, I'd like to include the spanish copy for spanish users and search indexers to find the video blog in spanish.

My ultimate goal, is to create a closed captioning system in many languages, that overlays' the video as it's playing. But for now, I'm testing this auto translation. what do you think? Better than nothing?

Scott the translation is pretty bad. My experience has been that the more English slang you have in the original text the worst job the tool will do. As a consolation, I am yet to find a tool that does translation to my satisfaction.
