#2 Windows 7 Taskbar Usage and Tricks

Good morning everyone! I’ve been upgrading friends and family from Windows XP and Vista to Windows 7. Everyone is saying great things about Windows 7, and I’m personally loving it. It just works, it’s fast, and I really like the new TaskBar. While there are a lot of features that I didn’t cover, this quick video is a nice introduction to the taskbar, showing how to arrange the icons, pin and unpin, as well as see the Most Recently Used (MRU) documents for each application. We also talk about pinning the MRU list, for more frequently used items.

Visual Studio Tip / Trick #$post.VSTricksNumber English Transcription:

I’d like to just take a minute and do some quick tips around the task bar in Windows 7. Couple of things are obvious, first we have got a difference between Vista and XP about how the icons are displayed and than obviously if you clicking an icon then that application is gonna open. But here is some tricks, if you right click on an icon its gonna give you this popup menu and one thing on the popup menu is that if the application was built with the most recently used list then you have the access or you have the option to open that item. So if you are you know in this example checking your credit report you can go right to that credit report screen. Another thing if you don’t have right click, for example if you are on a touch pad on a laptop and you right click is little bit difficult to use or lot of people just don’t use right click parents or non computer people. You can actually click this icon and then drag it up and as you drag it up that popup menu will appear for you and then you can select that item and you click off of it. Another thing that you can do with this is you can pin an item so if there is a bank for example or a blog site or some thing that you are going to very frequently your most recently used items is going to change but if you pin an item then its very it will always be there at the top its very available for you. Another thing that you can do is very quickly add an item to your task bar. So you can see here I have power point and then as I hover over you see I get that preview but I don’t have word any where on my menu. So I can actually start that from my start menu the same way that I would normally now you can see my icon is over here just go ahead and drag that over by my power point menu and if I close word you’ll see that, that icon actually goes away. If we go back and open it again then you’ll see that it doesn’t retain its position because all you new items show up at the end of your task tray but if I move that back and now either right click or drag it up I can pin this program to the task bar. And when its pinned you’ll notice that as I close the word document that icon stays there. Now naturally I can just click that and the application is gonna open up for me again pretty quickly and also drag that up it’ll have any used documents inside of word so nothing shows up there. But power points, I do have a couple and you have the pinning affect there for your most recently used documents so just a couple of quick things around the task bar that was helpful. Oh the another thing on the start menu you also have these right arrows and that’s gonna show you your most recently used documents as well so if you see those right arrows next to an application then that should be some thing that’s gonna let you quickly find or navigate through the most recently used documents for that application. So any way hope that was helpful, have a good day!
